Still only two and a half hours flying from the UK, ‘The Algarve’ which is the southern coast of Portugal and the main holiday region, offers lovely beaches, warm seas and some of the best golf courses in Europe. The main airport for the Algarve is Faro. It remains one of the top European destinations for British families due to the consistently good beach resorts on this south coast. They are well maintained, have safe bathing, good child friendly restaurants and quality holiday villa accommodation. Felt to be a little more upmarket than Spain but naturally a little more expensive. In the Summer the Atlantic sea breezes keep you cool but in the Winter can be chilly, ideally suitable for golfing or sight seeing holidays.
The Island of Madeira
Madeira lies as far South as Casa Blanca but some 350 miles away from Africa in the fresh clear waters of the Atlantic.
Lapped by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, this mountainous island has a milder and less arid climate than it's southerly neighbours, the Canaries. It is amazingly fertile and grows bananas, grapes other fruit and flowers which are colourfully displayed in the market of the islands capital, Funchal. A fantastic island for walking, with magnificent scenary and numerous tiny picturesque villages with friendly people.
