Information on Nerja, Costa Del Sol, Spain

Picturesque Nerja is a lovely Andalucian coastal town, set against a backdrop of the spectacular Sierra de Almitara mountains. Less developed than the coast's other resorts, this typically Spanish town is very interesting to explore, with its quaint bars, excellent restaurants and wide range of shops and boutiques to discover. In the centre, the Balcon de Europa square offers stunning views of the coast and its attractive sandy beaches.

Regarded as the most attractive, well kept resort on the Costa del Sol, and considered to have the best all year round climate in Europe,
Nerja is a delightful and unspoiled seaside town, which lies east Malaga. The area is one of outstanding beauty, with a tropical valley where avocado and olive trees grow in abundance and a dramatic back drop of the majestic Sierra Almijara mountain range.

To explore the surrounding countryside is a delight. You will discover unspoiled picturesque villages where nobody hurries, and traditional farming methods are still in evidence; with ploughs drawn by bullocks, farmers travelling on the back of a contented donkey, and elderly gentlemen sitting in groups under the shade of a large tree, while their wives paint the outside of the pretty white houses.

The town of nerja is predominantly Andalucian in style. It is a small - mid size, unspoiled fishing town which has not been over-developed and retains its charm and character, whilst still offering all the facilities needed for today's lifestyle.
Nerja can easily be explored by strolling through the narrow winding streets, where you will discover interesting courtyards, colourful shops, street side cafe's and small tranquil areas shaded by orange trees and pagodas covered in sub-tropical shrubs and flowers, which is an ideal place to rest and watch the world go by.

Balcon de Europa Square
The town centre sits perched on a cliff above a succession of sandy coves; some of which have a linking cliff-edge footpath leading to the long, delightful and sandy 'Burriana' beach, with its water sports, fresh seafood restaurants, ice cream parlour's and general shops.
The centrepiece of nerja is the 'Balcon de Europa' which is a splendid marble paved, palm tree lined promenade, stretching out into the shimmering blue Mediterranean with panoramic coastal views, and is the place to promenade or watch the street artists and live entertainment.
The choice of restaurants/bars in Nerja is tremendous, with delicious food to cater for all tastes and pockets, and can be found on the outskirts of nerja as well as in the town centre.

Every Tuesday morning the gypsy market is held in Nerja, while 5 kms away at Maro you will find the awe inspiring Cuevas de Nerja (Nerja caves), which forms a kind of underground cathedral containing prehistoric paintings and a spectacular selection of stalagmites and stalactites. Once a year a week of opera concerts are held within the caves.
A 6 km trip above Nerja brings you to the beautiful Moorish, mountain village of Frigiliana with its maze of narrow cobbled streets, lovely white houses with flowers hanging in every window or crevice and fantastic panoramic views down the valley to the sea.
